Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer commonly caused by exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma develops in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart cavity. This lining, called the mesothelium, is made of two cell layers. Mesothelioma causes fluid, inflammation, scar tissue and tumors to develop in the tissue lining and can disrupt organ function.

The symptoms of mesothelioma do not occur immediately after exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma does not typically appear until 10 to 50 years after exposure (known as a latency period). Most mesothelioma and asbestos-related disease victims were exposed to asbestos through their work. The companies who manufactured, sold and used asbestos knew about its hazardous nature, yet continued to use it for years – exposing workers to this dangerous substance.

There are also many cases of mesothelioma caused by bystander exposure to asbestos – where the victim of mesothelioma lived with someone who worked around asbestos and brought it into the home from work on their clothing.
