Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer commonly caused by exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma develops in the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart cavity. This lining, called the mesothelium, is made of two cell layers. Mesothelioma causes fluid, inflammation, scar tissue and tumors to develop in the tissue lining and can disrupt organ function.

Lung cancers are the most common of the asbestos-related cancers. Asbestos exposure has been linked to all the major cell types of lung cancer, including small cell, large cell, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell lung cancer.

Colorectal & Stomach Cancer

Studies indicate a correlation between exposure to asbestos and the development of colorectal cancer and stomach cancer.   When products containing asbestos are disturbed, tiny asbestos fibers are released into the air and inhaled or swallowed by workers or inhabitants in the area. Over time those fibers can become trapped in the tissues lining the colon and stomach causing cancer.

Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a serious lung condition that develops because of asbestos exposure and involves progressive scarring of lung tissue.

The symptoms of asbestos-related diseases do not occur immediately after exposure to asbestos. Symptoms and diagnosis do not typically appear until 10 to 50 years after exposure (known as a latency period).  Most asbestos-related disease victims were exposed to asbestos through their work. The companies who manufactured, sold, and used asbestos knew about its hazardous nature, yet continued to use it for years – exposing workers to this dangerous substance.
